The Programme:
Nations Sixth Form College is the International Centre in
Guyana for Cambridge University Examinations. We offer
up to 18 different A Level Programmes. A Levels are the
leading educational assessment around the world.
A Level syllabuses are divided into two parts; The AS Syllabus,
which is covered in the first year of 6th Form, and AL which is
covered in the second year. The system however allows for
considerable flexibility e.g. it is possible to do both the AS and
AL in one year in some subjects such as Psychology, Sociology
and Business.
We offer a very broad curriculum at Nations Sixth Form College. In addition to the 3 or 4 academic AS subjects chosen the students may also pursue General Studies which entails an examination of Current Affairs. The College also has a service component whereby the students work one hour per week on a service project in the school or the wider community.
Facilities:
The Sixth Form is housed in its own prestigious building. The building is well equipped and has ample space. The students are provided with computer facilities and DSL internet access. A beautiful swimming pool is on the campus.
Scholarships:
Nations Sixth Form College is offering a number of scholarships to students of high ability who may be in need of such assistance. Successful candidates would then be expected to maintain a certain grade point average each term to maintain the scholarship.
Contact Dr O’Toole for more details about the scholarships.
Nations 6th Form College offers a choice of 18 Cambridge
University A Levels, including:
N.B. At least 6 students are required for an option to be offered
Students select three subjects at AS/AL level. If the timetable allows they can choose a 4th subject.
ADVANCED SUBSIDIARY (AS)
What are the advantages of studying for the Advanced Subsidiary (AS) qualifications?
· The AS qualification has a number of advantages. It increases breadth and avoids narrow over-specialization. We are able to offer a very flexible 6th Form curriculum, using a mixture of A Level and AS syllabuses.
· It provides a staged assessment during the course of an A Level programme. The content of each Advanced Subsidiary syllabus represents the first half of the corresponding A Level syllabus. This reduces reliance on a final examination at the end of two years of study significantly lowering students’ anxiety about assessment. The early feedback provided by AS helps the students to set themselves targets and goals.
Nations Sixth Form College is a preparation for University studies. In addition to academic subjects, the students will also be assisted in research skills, the use of the internet and study skills.
In consultation with the Directors, it is possible to develop an intensive one year Sixth Form programme which would fulfill the entrance requirements for London University at Nations University (ie one AL and two AS).
Method of Study:
Nations Sixth Form College provides three routes to the AS/AL examinations:
a) Full – time Study:
Students will attend Nations Sixth Form College full time and will pursue 3 or 4 subjects. The fee for this is $90,000 for each of three terms. Students provide their own text books. A comprehensive 6th Form library is available.
b) Part- time Study:
This option is available for students at other schools and the public at large. The cost for this option is $30,000 per subject, per term.
c) Distance Education:
This option is for students from other schools, the general public and for those living far away from Georgetown. In this case Distance Teaching packages have been prepared in some subjects that give a comprehensive overview of the syllabus. The package includes extensive background reading, exam papers, model answers and self administered question and answers. Cost: $12,000 per subject per term
